The Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Republican Party. Tracing its heritage back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison's Democratic-Republican Party, the modern-day Democratic Party was founded around 1828, making it the world's oldest active party.

In 1997 and 1999, she helped create the State Children's Health Insurance Program. She also tackled the problems of adoption and family safety and foster care. At the 1995 UN conference on women, held in Beijing, Clinton stated in a then controversial and influential speech, that "human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights". Her marriage endured the Lewinsky scandal of 1998, and her role as first lady drew a polarized response from the public.

The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the GOP is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, the other being its historic rival, the Democratic Party.

In June 2015, Trump announced his candidacy for president as a Republican and quickly emerged as the front-runner for his party's nomination. His platform includes opposition to trade agreements that he regards as unfair, such as NAFTA and TPP, renegotiation of U.S.–China trade deals, immigration enforcement including the building of a wall along the U.S.–Mexico border, reform of veterans' care, replacement of the Affordable Care Act, and tax cuts. Trump has also suggested temporarily banning foreign Muslims from entering the United States, which he later said would focus on those from countries with a "proven history" of terrorism, and he also advocated raising the level of vetting for immigration from those nations.

Jill Stein

The Green Party of the United States (GPUS or Greens) is a green and progressive political party in the United States. The party, which is the country's fourth-largest by membership, promotes environmentalism, nonviolence, social justice, participatory grassroots democracy, gender equality, LGBT rights and anti-racism.

On February 6, 2015, Stein announced the formation of an exploratory committee in preparation for a potential campaign for the Green Party's presidential nomination in 2016. On June 22, she formally announced her candidacy in a live interview with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! After former Ohio state senator Nina Turner reportedly declined to be her running mate, Stein chose human rights activist Ajamu Baraka on August 1.

During the campaign, Stein has said that it is "hard to say" whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton is the "greater evil". She said that the Democratic and Republican parties are "two corporate parties" that have converged into one and the same party. Stein has put great emphasis on attracting Bernie Sanders' supporters to her campaign. She posted a meme on Twitter that showed a 99% match with Sanders (and a 91% match with Hillary Clinton) on ISideWith, an online political quiz. Stein noted prior, unsuccessful efforts by the Greens to convince Sanders to run on the Green Party ballot line, and said that she was willing to "put everything on the table," including the possibility of a joint ticket.
